MasViento Wind Forecast - (Today: Mostly sunny. East wind 8-10 mph) Buenos dias! A partial ASCAT pass last evening measured light and variable winds over the southern Sea of Cortez, and all numerical models show a weak surface pressure gradient and light background flow will continue today. Surface low pressure over the southwestern U.S. on Thursday will create westerly flow over most of the Baja Peninsula, however one of the global models shows a weak ridge of high pressure nosing in from the Pacific over northern BCS. IF this feature does form and we see only thin, high clouds, we could see just enough north background flow and sunshine on Thursday to trigger at least a partial thermal response…stay tuned. All of the latest model runs show the low far to our north moving rapidly eastward on Friday as surface high pressure builds into the western U.S. This will send a new pulse of north wind down the Sea of Cortez, and with only thin, high clouds expected we should see a good thermal boost as well. Saturday will likely bring norte conditions to our area, as the surface high to our north builds southeastward and tightens the surface pressure gradient over BCS. The gradient is forecast to weaken on Sunday with norte conditions subsiding, but it will likely still be a windy day.
Winds are forecast to weaken further on Monday, but enough background north flow should persist for another kiteable day. Long-range global models differ on timing a bit, but in general it looks like a string of good days will continue through the middle of next week and into the following weekend as surface high pressure builds to our north. Wes - daily forecasts: MasViento.
Farmers Market - The market is on! Every Thursday, located on the main road, Corredor Isla Cerralvo, just a few blocks north of Club Cerralvo. Two announcements this week:
  • The Farmer’s Market now has a wonderful new organic farm stand with a large selection of diverse and beautiful home-grown produce. Find it on the right as you come in, behind the food truck. Lalo comes from Miraflores (near SJD), so let’s support him and make it worth his while to continue making that long drive. chris.bradley3@gmailcom
  • Fresh Smoked Yellow-Tail and smoked Yellow-Tail Dip this Thursday at the Farmers market. Paty’s homemade sugar free Fig Jam, her original Pepper Jelly, Pineapple Habanero Pepper Jelly, Mango Chutney, Mandarine Jam and Vanilla beans from Veracruz. Also Baja Art cards and Handmade Mexican blouses. See you there, Larry and Paty. jackpotchartersbaja@yahoo.com
Tortugas La Ventana - The second olive ridley turtle nest (# 362) in the ejido campground is due to hatch. However, due to the “cold” weather, expectations for a healthy hatch are somewhat reserved. If you have contacted me to be on the phone tree you will receive a call if the hatch happens. Go Tortugas! rawbaretoes@gmail.com
Baja Birding Club Second Outing - “Above and Below the Sea” Seeing and identifying critters under the sea is simply a modified form of birdwatching. The organisms even include “birdy” names like SquirrelFish, Cardinals, Parrotfish, etc. This coming Sunday we will attempt a first, a combination of birdwatching and snorkeling (both are optional). Bring your binos, bird guides, snorkeling gear, bathing suits, water, sunscreen, etc. for a great morning of fun. We will start with about a mile hike up John’s Java Trail just beyond Hot Springs beach (just up the hill to the “off-the-grid” houses and right beside the driveway into Casa Linda on your left. Our target bird will be the endemic Xantu’s Hummingbird, an endemic (only found here) species here in Baja! For those who would like to follow the hike with a guided snorkeling excursion by veteran snorkeler Greg Martinez, we will explore the fantastic reef just at the north end of the Hot Springs beach. Greg and I checked it out this past weekend and found lots of interesting fish. Wearing some sort of lycra or wet suit is a good idea to ward off sunburn and keep in the heat. We had literally no problems with any stinging phytoplankton or jellyfish. We will meet at the Hot Springs beach at 0700 on Sunday, December 11. Best of all….no charge! David M. Bird david.bird@mcgill.ca
