FYI - Questions - Help
What’s Happening in La Ventana? Let us know if you have something to share or questions for the community.
  • Thursday open mic night at Cornamenta Beach Bar cancelled until further notice due to the rapidly evolving circumstance. Fingers crossed the music returns soon. darrellmstewart@gmail.com
  • I am an oceanographer and was recently given a temperature and wave monitoring buoy (aqualink.org) to deploy over one of our local coral reefs here in LV/El Sargento. These corals are some of the most robust in the world, and the data this buoy will gather will be publicly available (in real time) and help track coral health for science. All we need to do is deploy it, not run over it, and take a picture of the anchor each month to pair with the data. If you are interested in helping or have suggestions for where to deploy let me know at aleitner245@gmail.com.
  • I need to have an eye test and new glasses. Can anyone please recommend a good optometrist in La Paz? Chris.bradley3@gmail.com
  • Wanted Game Players. Cards, scrabble etc. Hand and Foot, Pinochle and other games. No experience necessary. Let’s meet and decide what day works best, I was thinking early afternoon any day. Joanna joanna-bennett@live.com
Baja Birding Club - No less than 22 intrepid birdwatchers made the trip this past Sunday to visit the EcoParque which includes the sewage lagoon in La Paz. We saw a record 45 species, including several wader species, 7 different species of ducks and 9 kinds of birds of prey. The Bird of the Day was a vermillion flycatcher. The next trip will be this coming Sunday to visit the Sierra Laguna Biosphere. Bring some cash to pay the rancher for parking fees, it should not be very much. We usually get some very interesting species there, including Xantus’s hummingbird, acorn woodpecker, San Lucas robin, and various warblers. Meet for carpooling at 7:30am this Sunday, January 9 outside Marlin Azul just south of Baja Joe’s. MasViento Wind Forecast - (Today: Sunny. North wind 20-24 mph) Both ASCAT satellites passed over BCS last evening and measured widespread 15 knot winds over the Sea of Cortez. Infrared satellite loops early this morning show another sunny day ahead, and with solid north flow forecast to continue we will see another good day. The latest model runs show the surface high to our north beginning to weaken tomorrow, resulting in decreasing north background flow, however enough should remain to combine with lots of sun to give us one more great day. Models then show low pressure becoming established to our north on Friday, and this will result in light background flow over BCS both Friday and Saturday, with only light onshore breezes expected each afternoon. Surface high pressure is then forecast to build back into the western U.S. Saturday night into Sunday, sending a new surge of north wind into BCS. Wes - daily forecasts: MasViento.
Farmers Market - The market is on! Every Thursday, located on the main road, Corredor Isla Cerralvo, just a few blocks north of Club Cerralvo. Announcements this week:
  • Fresh Smoked Yellow-Tail and smoked Yellow-Tail Dip this Thursday at the Farmers Market, great for those appetizers. Paty’s homemade Strawberry Jam, her original Pepper Jelly, Pineapple Habanero Pepper Jelly, Mango Chutney & Vanilla beans from Veracruz. Also Baja Art cards and Handmade Mexican blouses. stop by and try a sample. See you there, Larry and Paty
Community Action
Local Ambulance Services - Our Ambulance is not a free government service. The Ambulance is regulated by government but run entirely by dedicated, experienced volunteers, led by our amazing Lupita (Guadalupe) Cosio Barrera. They receive no pay. The service receives a tiny government subsidy which only covers the gas for 1½ trips to La Paz each week. They sometimes have to make 2 or even 3 trips a day/night! Keeping the service running needs money to cover essential costs: gas, repairs, maintenance, tires, replacement of equipment and supplies used on call-outs, communications, trainings for the volunteers, their uniforms, phones, and other costs when on duty, etc.
The whole operation depends on donations from users and well-wishers. Costs of equipment and supplies have sky-rocketed: e.g. the cost of providing 25 mins of oxygen to a patient with Covid or other respiratory distress has more than doubled since last year and is now over 1,000 pesos.
Please donate as generously as you can to Lupita’s Ambulance PayPal account: paypal.me/ambulancia247 or contact her by phone and Whatsapp on 612 590 0468.
To make a cash donation, or for further information, please contact the following members of the Ambulance Support Group, who have been assisting Lupita since the beginning: Thomas Munro (First Responder and Training Officer, JIBC Canada): thomasmunrosr@gmail.com • Manon Levac: manonlevac@hotmail.com • Heidi Hart: harthe77@gmail.com • Chris Bradley: chris.bradley3@gmail.com
No Más Basura - Our next Recycling Day is tomorrow 6th of January. Find us behind the Farmers Market from 8-10 am. Come check out our posts made from your recycling! We take all plastics now except PVC. But all the rest, like Clamshells, bags e.g. tortilla chips, zip locks, rice and pasta etc. Currently are not taking cardboard, tetra packs or paper. You can help to speed up the drop off process and presort at home. Please wear your mask at the drop off station! Thanks a lot for being part of the solution and for your corporation. Your NMB team nomasbasuralv@gmail.com
