All Things Reptile - (by Chance Stevens) The Speckled Rattlesnake (Crotalus mitchellii) is one of several species of rattlesnakes that inhabits the area around La Ventana, living exclusively near rocky areas. They eat mostly rodents, and sometimes birds and lizards.
Rattlesnakes are ambush predators, meaning they will lie in place for days on end, waiting for prey to pass by. Most of the time, their ambush spots will be in rock crevasses or “hidey-holes.” They are semi-nocturnal in the winter, and fully nocturnal in the summer.
Rattlesnakes are one of the most feared and unjustly killed groups of snakes. Being venomous, people are scared of them and may act on those fears, which is the reason they are in decline. Yet, like many other venomous snakes, if you leave them alone you are extremely unlikely to be bitten. And it’s pretty easy to leave them alone if you just pay attention: they like to live hidden in rocks, so they are hard to find in the first place, and their rattle serves as a warning to be cautious. The majority of rattlesnake bites - over 90%! - happen because people either are not paying attention and accidentally step on them, or are trying to catch or kill them.
If you are bitten, the best thing to do is stay calm and find the nearest place with anti-venom, typically at a hospital. In La Ventana, the closest hospital with anti-venom is in La Paz. Being bitten hurts a lot but most snake bites are not fatal. Ideally, you should get anti-venom as quickly as possible; for rattlesnakes, you have at least three hours.
Rattlesnakes are beautiful and impressive snakes that are more scared of us than we are of them. Many good people already know not to harm these magnificent creatures. If left alone, humans and rattlesnakes can live in harmony like we once did long ago.
If you want to talk or walk reptiles, email ChanceStevens123@icloud.com. And check out the new All Things Reptile page on the website, an archive of all of the reptile stories posted in the newsletter.
MasViento Wind Forecast - My last forecast for the season was Apr 26. Thanks again to all of you for the kind words along the way! See you in October. Wes - daily forecasts: MasViento.
Farmers Market - The market is over for the season.
La Ventana Pickleball - Want to hear some great news? Tango Azul Pickleball Resort (Phase 1) is 70% funded! Thank you very much to all of our Founding Members who have demonstrated their excitement, love of the game and trust in us by getting onboard! We are only two months into this launch, and look what we have accomplished! We have been contacted by 14 other picklers who are planning to join soon, so we are very close to closing Phase 1 Founding Memberships.
Please note that Venmo released news that they will begin charging 1.75% transaction fees on May 23rd. If you were planning to join and use that service, you can save yourself 57USD by sending your funds before then. As many people in our Baja community head north, please keep encouraging your friends to join. We have gotten where we are today mostly through word-of-mouth and through friends pushing their fellow picklers to commit to their future health and enjoyment.
Please let me know if you have any questions, comments or recommendations: tangoazulpickleball@gmail.com. You can also follow our progress on Facebook - La Ventana Pickleball
Community Action
No Más Basura - Our next Recycling day will be tomorrow Thursday 5th of May. We are waiting for you between 8-10am same location.
Did you know that a small battery can contaminate 600,000 liters of water? Did you know that the place where we dump our community’s trash is above a body of water whose neck is about 20 feet deep? That’s why it’s very important that you don’t throw the batteries in the trash, we send them to a confinement center where they won’t cause harm to the environment. Your weekly donations are used for the proper recycling of batteries which is very important to environmental health.
Thank you for being part of the change! Your NMB team Nomasbasuralv@gmail.com
