  • Road Report Oct 25th. Mex #5 (258 miles) with border crossing in Mexicali going through San Felipe is awesome and the way to go. This rural smooth wide relatively straight road avoids a lot of cities, traffic and curvy mountain terrain. Crossing in Tijuana driving #1 is 75 miles longer. No bypasses on #5 and all the way to La Ventana. Nothing significant to report and in my opinion overall the road is better then it’s ever been. However at all times be extremely vigilant driving the Baja Peninsula. - captain.michaeld@gmail.com

Baja Night Sky – The new moon Thursday will bring dark skies through the weekend. Find a location by 7 pm that blocks out nearby light pollution. Look for Jupiter, Saturn, and Venus lined up in the SW. Catch Venus early as it sets before 8 pm. Jupiter is in the south halfway to the zenith, with Saturn at its lower right. The summer triangle is high in the WSW, with Vega at the lower right, Deneb at the top, and Altair at the lower left.
Go out by 5:30 am to see the Winter Hexagon high in the east. Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky, anchors the lower right corner just below the famous constellation of Orion the Hunter. The Big Dipper is standing over the north end of Cerralvo. Do you know how to use it to find the La Ventana’s latitude from the stars? Learn about this and everything else you need to know astronomically in the Baja Night Sky Observer’s Guide.
Jupiter, Saturn, and Venus in alignment - Thu 4 @ 7pm.

Help Save Our Night Sky – Unshaded outdoor lights ruin your neighbors’ night sky. For a temporary fix, wrap aluminum foil around the sides of outdoor lighting fixtures (while the light is off!) to direct light down where you need it. For a permanent solution, either 1) replace light bulbs with motion-detector LED+ light bulbs. They work in transparent and opaque glass fixtures and cost about 8.50us each at Amazon. At El Arco in La Paz, ask for a “lampara LED con sensor de presencia y fotocelda,” or 2) install night-sky-friendly fixtures shown at www.darksky.org   Tom Spradley at bajanightsky@gmail.com
MasViento Wind Forecast - (Today: Sunny. North wind 18-22 mph) Buenos dias! Welcome back to another season of wind forecasts, nerd notes, and general discussion about the weather here in beautiful La Ventana. One of the MetOp satellites passed over BCS late last evening and measured 10 knot winds, and even a couple of 15 knot points, over much of the southern Sea of Cortez. Latest numerical model runs indicate that the north background flow will be a bit stronger today than yesterday, and with infrared satellite loops showing clear skies, we should see a solid thermal boost today. The surface pressure gradient will weaken some tomorrow, but enough background north flow should remain for another good day. Friday remains a low-confidence forecast, as it will likely be a transition day to a light wind regime as the surface pressure gradient continues to weaken over BCS. Model runs show only light north or northeast afternoon flow for the weekend into early next week. Global models have shown the possibility of a late season tropical cyclone passing far to our south early next week, but the only effect here would be increasing high clouds. Long-range forecasts continue to indicate surface high pressure rapidly building into the western U.S. on Wednesday, with increasing north flow over BCS. Models then show the season’s first true arctic airmass moving south from the Yukon into the western U.S. on Thursday into Friday of next week, and this could bring our first norte…stay tuned. .
