  • Failure to Launch: my veg garden has failed to sprout like usual this year. If you have any seedlings you are thinning or extras, I would love to pick them up and provide a new home. I have tomato starts in exchange. Happy Gardening. Thanks 686-392-2948 mx cell
  • Is the bus service from El Sargento to La Paz running this year and what hours? Bob
Baja Night Sky - Comet Leonard is growing fainter by the day, but you can catch it tonight precisely in the SW at 7 pm. Look 10 degrees above the true horizon (not the mountain tops), about a fist at arm’s length. Leonard is too faint to see without binoculars. Start ten minutes early where your vision is not disturbed by outdoor lights, and get your binos focused on a bright star or planet before searching for the comet. Stars and comets set at the rate of one degree every 4 minutes, so you have about 20 minutes to scan the region with binoculars looking for a faint cloud streaking away from the sun’s location below the mountain peaks. Use averted vision (off-center vision) to make the comet pop out much brighter. This week is your last chance to see Venus, Saturn, and Jupiter lined up in the west. Venus, the brightest and lowest of the three, sets early. Through binoculars, it looks like a crescent moon. It will soon disappear behind the sun and reappear in mid-January as the morning star before sunrise. By the way, if we all shade or turn off our outdoor lights, it will make finding the comet much easier. Tom at

Baja Birding Club - Fourth Outing: In Search of Waterbirds. I know that a sewage lagoon does not sound like an appealing place to watch birds, but trust me when I say that one can see some amazing birdlife in such places, including the one in La Paz not far from Walmart. If time permits, we may also visit a nearby beach for seabirds and possibly even the dam reservoir on the way home. If interested, meet me for car-pooling just outside Marlin Azul restaurant just south of Baja Joe’s at 7:30am, Sunday, January 2. David Bird.
MasViento Wind Forecast - (Today: Becoming sunny. North wind 14-16 mph) The ASCAT satellites measured 5-10 knot north winds just offshore last evening, and all numerical model forecasts show north background flow this afternoon that may be just enough to help trigger our thermal. Thick high clouds early this morning should clear by mid-morning and a sunny afternoon will likely give us at least a partial thermal boost. Surface low pressure will move southward along the northern and central California coast today and into southern California on Thursday. As this happens the background flow will become light and variable on Thursday over BCS, with only a weak onshore wind expected during the afternoon. The surface low is forecast to move inland over the northern Baja Peninsula Thursday night then into the southwestern U.S. on Friday. The background flow will become westerly on Friday, with only light and variable winds expected here in the lee of the Cacachilas Mountains. As the surface low races eastward on Saturday, strong surface high pressure will build into the western U.S. and send a surge of north wind down the Sea of Cortez. Norte conditions look likely for Saturday night and Sunday, with gusty north winds and a developing large swell. Norte conditions may ease a bit on Monday, but relatively strong north flow and sunny skies will likely lead to another windy day. Long-range numerical model forecasts show the surface high to our north remaining nearly stationary, with a string of great days that may last through next week. Wes - daily forecasts: MasViento.
