Baja Night Sky - One of the most beautiful things in nature is a young crescent Moon in the twilight sky, with the darkened portion glowing dimly. No wonder skywatchers want to catch one just after sunset! The century-old naked-eye record for the youngest New Moon is just under 15 hours. Incidentally, the faint glow of the dark part is called “Earthshine.” Can you guess why? When the Moon sets Saturday around 6:17 p.m., it will be 17 hours old. I doubt anyone will find it. If you try, start looking by 6 p.m. using binoculars. Try to see Sunday’s 31-hour old crescent before it sets around 7:20 p.m. It should be easy to find Monday – Wednesday from 7 to 8 p.m. as the thin crescent visits Venus, Saturn, and Jupiter on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday evenings, respectively. The Moon’s nightly location makes it easy to identify and enjoy a view of each planet unless clouds or outdoor lights block your access to the night sky. It takes work to guarantee free and easy access to the night sky and mountain trails and beaches around the bay, especially if someone has blocked them off with lights, fences, or uncontrolled development. The night sky has always spoken to humans in metaphors. It’s been telling some people that the government should protect access to beaches from Lake Choco and the Bufadora to the Hot Springs by making these two natural marvels the first Baja California Sur State Parks. Go outdoors Saturday – Wednesday nights, listen with your eyes and join the effort to protect access to nature around the bay. MasViento Wind Forecast - (Today: Sunny. North wind 16-20 mph) No ASCAT data this morning, but most of the latest numerical model runs forecast sufficient north background flow and lots of sunshine today to help trigger a solid thermal. The surface pressure gradient is expected to tighten tomorrow, and with another sunny day on tap, we should see a good day. Friday could be the windiest day of the week, with only a few, thin high clouds expected and solid north background flow. High clouds may thicken some on Saturday, but at this point it looks like enough sun may filter through to trigger at least a partial thermal kick. The surface pressure gradient is forecast to weaken on Sunday, but enough background north flow should remain to continue the streak of good days. Long-range models show another cutoff low forming just west of BCS on Monday with a very weak surface wind pattern setting up for much of the following week. . Wes - daily forecasts: MasViento.

Fundación Azul Cerralvo - Christmas is approaching, a joyful time for most of us, and a difficult time for those in need. This year again, Fundación Azul Cerralvo would appreciate your help. Justina has been working incredibly hard at providing food, medicine, medical supplies and household goods to the isolated families in the area, most of them with disabled people.

You can drop off donations at the Azul Cerralvo building, across from the baseball stadium: dried food, toys, gently used clothing, the list is endless. No junk, and no junk food, please! You can also donate money. I will collect cash, and Justina has a PayPal account here.

No Más Basura - Thank you for your donations for Sandra, very much appreciated! Final conclusions after meeting with the oncologist in Mexico City is that she does not have thyroid cancer but rather a cystic thyroid. The treatment is radioactive iodine to control growth of future cysts forming. There will be follow up appointments in Mexico City in the near future.
